The History of Pickleball
In 1965 Joel Pritchard, a congressman from Washington State, and Bill Bell, a successful businessman, came back to Pritchard’s home on Bainbridge Island, WA (near Seattle) after a round of golf one summer Saturday. They discovered their families sitting idle. With an old badminton court on the property, the duo searched for equipment but couldn't locate a complete set of rackets. They decided to make do with ping-pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball, setting the net at a height of 60 inches initially. As they played, they noticed the ball bounced well on the asphalt, prompting them to lower the net to 36 inches. Barney McCallum was introduced to the game the following weekend at Pritchard’s home. Together, the trio established rules inspired by badminton, with a focus on creating a game suitable for family play.
